The Culture C.O.-O.P.
DAVIS, Calif., March 3rd, 2015
Long time Davis community member Sandy Lynne Holman, Director of The Culture C.O.-O.P. and author of award-winning children’s books like We All Have A Heritage, is one among seven recipients to receive the Chancellor’s Achievement Award for Diversity and Community on Tuesday, March 3rd, 2015. The award recognizes students, staff, and community members for substantial contributions to our increasingly diverse and evolving world.
Holman has spent over 30 years working with youth of all ages, as well as those interested in diversity and equity. Through The Culture C.O.-O.P., which stands for Caring, Optimistic, Open-minded People, she promotes understanding and respect for diversity, cultural competency, reading, and a quality education for all, by providing people with the necessary skills and training to combat inequality.
As director of The Culture C.O.-O.P, Holman collaborates with schools, businesses, communities and families to encourage students to read and stay in school. After a successful East Coast kick offthis past summer 2014, The Culture C.O.-O.P. just hosted their West Coast kick off at Barnes and Noble, which focuses on anti-bullying, literacy, and diversity. Holman led children in motivational cheers and dances, awarded books and emphasized respect, education, and cultural awareness.
Holman has served in a variety of positions that have ultimately prepared her to now lead a team of interns at The Culture C.O.-O.P. She provides opportunities for them to gain real world experiences and grow as leaders as they work together to identify and address issues of social justice, discrimination, and prejudice. She is honored to be selected as a recipient and would like to thank her friends, family, and interns for helping to promote her mission.
